From Intention to Action - The Missing Link in Success

Have you ever started a week with the best of intentions, only to reach Friday wondering where the time went?

You planned to work on an important project, make progress towards a goal or finally tackle something you have been putting off. Yet somehow, the urgent took over, unexpected problems appeared, and the important was pushed aside once again.

It happens to all of us.

We know what we want to achieve. We may even have a clear vision and a well-thought-out plan. But there is often a gap between knowing what we want and taking the action required to make it happen.

For October, my Reach Potential theme is Success Loves Alignment of Action. It is a reminder that success is not simply about what we intend to do. It is about bringing our daily actions into alignment with what matters most.

Good intentions are only the beginning

Intention gives us direction and purpose, but intention without action remains an idea.

We can intend to grow our business, strengthen our relationships or become better leaders. However, if our daily decisions do not support those intentions, we are unlikely to see the results we desire.

Often, the challenge is not that we do not know what to do. It is that other things keep taking priority.

Emails get answered, meetings fill the calendar, and small problems demand our attention. Before we know it, we have spent the day being busy without necessarily moving closer to our most important goals.

Being busy and being productive are not the same thing.

Three ways to turn intention into action

Get clear on what matters most.

Before deciding what to do, identify the outcome you want to achieve. What would make the biggest difference to your business, leadership or personal life this month?

Clarity helps you recognise which activities deserve your time and attention.

Make your next step specific.

Instead of saying, “I need to work on my business strategy”, decide what that means in practice. Perhaps you will spend 45 minutes reviewing your goals, identify three opportunities for growth or contact a potential client.

Specific actions are easier to start and easier to measure.

Put it in your calendar.

A priority without a place in your calendar is easily displaced. Schedule time for meaningful work and protect that commitment as you would an important client meeting.

You cannot always control what happens during your day, but you can make deliberate choices about how you use your time.

Progress begins with one decision

We sometimes wait until we feel ready, motivated or completely clear before taking action. Yet clarity often comes through action rather than before it.

You learn by starting, gain confidence by doing and discover what works by making adjustments along the way.

You do not need every answer before taking the first step. You simply need to identify the next meaningful action and commit to it.

Your October reflection

Consider one goal you have been intending to pursue but have not yet acted on.

Ask yourself: What is holding me back? What is one action I could take this week? When will I do it?

Choose one thing, make it specific and schedule it.

Success loves alignment of action because our results are shaped by what we consistently choose to do, not simply by what we hope to achieve.

What is one action you will take this week to bring your intentions to life?
