How Your Words Shape Your Results
Have you ever noticed how two people can face the same situation yet describe it completely differently?
One person sees possibilities. The other sees obstacles.
One talks about solutions. The other focuses on problems.
The circumstances may be identical, but their language reveals something important—their mindset.
Alignment of Communication: one of the most influential conversations you'll ever have is the one you have with yourself.
Words are powerful.
They influence how we think, how we feel, how we respond to situations and, ultimately, the actions we take.
I often say:
"What you focus on, speak into, and act on consistently is what you create."
When we repeatedly tell ourselves we're overwhelmed, behind, or don't have enough time, our brain naturally looks for evidence that supports those beliefs. Before long, they begin to feel like facts.
The opposite is also true.
When we intentionally choose language that focuses on possibilities, progress and solutions, we begin to notice opportunities we may have overlooked before.
This doesn't mean pretending problems don't exist. It means choosing language that empowers rather than limits us.
Consider these simple shifts:
- Instead of "I have to…", try "I choose to…"
- Instead of "I'm too busy…", ask "What's my priority?"
- Instead of "I don't have time…", ask "How can I make time for what matters?"
- Instead of "This is impossible…", ask "What's one step I can take?"
These small changes may seem insignificant, but they influence the way we approach our work and our lives.
The words we use with others matter just as much.
Encouraging words build confidence.
Clear words reduce confusion.
Honest words build trust.
Kind words strengthen relationships.
As leaders, parents, colleagues and friends, we have opportunities every day to influence people through the language we choose.
Take a moment to think about your recent conversations.
Were your words creating hope or discouragement?
Were they building confidence or creating uncertainty?
Were they helping people move forward?
Communication is more than exchanging information. It is about creating understanding, trust and direction.
Choose words that reflect the future you want to create.
Because every conversation, whether with others or with yourself, is shaping your next decision.
